Information

The grapefruit is a hybrid of orange and pomelo, whereby pomelos are a little bigger and heavier. The name grapefruit comes from the fact that this fruit grows in clusters on trees, similar to bunches of grapes.

This fruit was discovered at the beginning of the 18th century in Barbados, its origins for commercial use stem back to Florida, however. A distinction is made between two main groups of the fruit: white fruits with yellow flesh, and red fruits with rosé to ruby-red coloured flesh.

Good to know

  • The flesh of white grapefruit has a sour/bitter taste
  • Red-coloured flesh varieties such as Ruby Red taste sweeter and smoother
